Here’s what Bull Run gave out this week:
Potatoes
Kohlrabi
Garlic
Celery
basil
Thai basil
Tomatillos
Peaches
Sorrel
For the first time Leigh tried growing celery. It had been doing fine, but was sucking up too much water, so it had to go as soon as it was big enough to eat. It is really dark, leafy, and has a very strong flavor. Perfect for pairing with this weeks potatoes for a salad or soup. Thirty-one days and counting without measurable rain (a trace fell on Monday). Even with constant irrigation from the springs, the crops are still suffering.
What did you get this week?
DC Harvest is a family effort by Art Drauglis, Carly Lesser (aka Ketzirah) and Amy Monsarrat. Amy has a long history of environmental activism and social justice work and Ketzirah has strong focus on the spiritual side of local and seasonal eating. Art works for a CSA, cans, gardens, and is a rockin farm-to-table cook. All three have made the DC region their home for a decade (or more) and know from experience the difference eating locally can make.

I got broccoli instead of kohlrahbi and have a potato, leek & cabbage soup in the crockpot right now! Seasoned with some thyme from the back garden, which is both new and awesome.
